A rare bird from one of the most respected boutique builders working today.
The easiest answer to why we love this is: because we simply love Telecasters! But, that's not why you're here. This is a Koll Telecaster which is a) super rare and b) super interesting because Saul Koll doesn't really make copies of, well, anything.
The reason you should be excited about this guitar, and why we were, is that Saul's guitars all have an incredibly easy playing, inspiring, and musical feel - and to have that directed at the classic Tele is very, very cool. The neck is slightly atypical for a Tele - Saul's guitars draw inspiration from Gretsch and Gibson Juniors/Les Pauls (to name but two) - which means this neck is more in the Gretsch world. Slender, yet enough meat on the bones to be comfy, and ultimately, very sleek and easy on your hand.
Loaded with Glendale hardware and a set of Lollar Tele pickups (our fave from Jason Lollar's line, truth be told), the tones are a sweeter, less brash version of a Tele's ubiquitous twang. That's one of the reasons we love Lollar Tele pickups as they have that mid-50s upper midrange and sweater treble response while still delivering classic Tele tones.
If you're a fan of Koll already, you'll know what to expect with this beautiful blackguard-style Tele. If you're new to Koll guitars, expect to be very pleasantly surprised at how Saul has tamed what can be a tricky guitar to master given the simplicity of the design.
