Two families of instrument, one shared idea. Resonators do it with a spun metal cone, which pushes the sound out through the body with a volume and metallic bite a wooden top alone cannot produce. It is the sound of Delta blues, of bluegrass dobro, of a National cutting through a room with nothing plugged in.
Lap slide guitars come at it from the other side of the coin, with a hollow neck, a raised nut, and a body built to be played flat across your knees with a steel bar, closer to the Hawaiian tradition that started it all.
