With exceptional creativity, craftsmanship, and tonal versatility, Ron Thorn’s SoCal C/S redefines boutique guitar excellence.
Why We Love This
If you follow the boutique electric guitar world, you know the name Ron Thorn. With nearly three decades of experience—from serving as Fender’s exclusive inlay artist since 1995, to founding Thorn Guitars, and ultimately becoming Principal Master Builder and Director of Master Build Operations at the Fender Custom Shop, Ron’s pedigree is unmatched.
The SoCal C/S reflects everything he’s known for: smart design, elite craftsmanship, and tonal brilliance. Its offset alder body isn’t just visually striking, it’s engineered for balance and comfort, especially when seated. The ergonomic shape naturally positions the guitar for optimal neck angle and relaxed playing.
The Round C neck carve (.83"–.93"), 10" radius, dovetail neck joint, and Ron’s signature "hidden fret ends" make for an experience that’s unbelievably smooth. It feels like the neck is part of you - effortless, fast, and inviting. Even unplugged, the SoCal C/S is remarkably alive. Dig in on chords and the whole instrument resonates under your hands; single notes bloom and sustain with a liveliness that makes it hard to put down.
At the heart of its tone are Thorn’s in-house VC-50 pickups, paired with custom wiring that expands on familiar Strat territory. Expect greater range, fatter bridge tones, and a natural ability to shift from crystalline cleans to aggressive, overdriven tones worthy of early EVH.
