When Tony first alluded to an American-style amp design he'd been working on, we wasted no time in offering our unwavering support by way of a frank "we'll take it". There's no convincing needed when it comes to Tex Amps.
After roughly a year of working out all of the details- from the mid-century preamp architecture to the inclusion of a Master Volume and the ever-important aesthetic style, the WE40 was born. Just like Leo Fender, Tony pulled inspiration from Western Electric schematics. An octal preamp section paired with a 5881/6L6 output stage, it offers a harmonically rich and dynamic sound that has rounder, warmer feel than some of the other Tex offerings, all without compromising chime and clarity.
The Instrument and Mic channels are quite complementary, with the former having a leaner, brighter voice and the latter bringing in a bit more low end and low mid content. This proves helpful when moving between single coils and humbuckers, but each channel does have its own voice to a degree. The Instrument Channel also features a pull Bass Boost which works wonders with brighter single coil pickups.
Low volume clean tones are incredibly sweet and chimey with a naturally smooth and musical compression. Pushing the volume and/or tone controls up past the midway point starts to open things up, where things get more harmonically saturated and fatter sounding. At this point, your pick attack can control the natural drive of the amp a bit more. At full bore, the amp gets more aggressive and overdriven - almost fuzz-like (depending on your settings). Dial your guitar's volume knob back a touch, and the WE40 cleans up beautifully.
Like many of Tony's amps, 20 watts is just a number. They have a much bigger feel than they read on paper. Thanks to a fantastic Master Volume, you can keep overall volume tamed when the situation requires it, all without impacting the feel and dynamics.
Dressed up in all back in a 1940s style cabinet with a metal grill, it presents just as unique as this one-off circuit sounds. Tony's eye for design is in step with ear for tone.
While we're unlikely to see another WE40 again, we're here to applaud and champion yet another masterful example of one of Tony's creations. These amps don't miss.
