Clarity, responsiveness, power, projection, and meticulous craftsmanship — there is a reason Nugget mandolins are so sought after!
As you well know, a Nugget is a rare sighting, as these surely count among the most elusive of modern mandolins. We have been fortunate to host just a precious few of Mike Kemnitzer's creations over the years, and every time it feels like a special event. So it goes this F5 Deluxe, built in 2009, and featuring an aged, red spruce top harvested by Kemnitzer himself, paired with a one-piece, antique sugar maple back and sides that dates to the 1920s.
This Nugget commands your attention right away, boasting that magical responsiveness, presence, and projection for which these mandolins have earned such a passionate following. It is a wonderful instrument to play, and in Ethan Setiawan's hands, a serious treat to hear!!
Of course, that Nugget sound has haunted us (well, me, anyway, and so many others) since first hearing Howie Tarnower play his Nugget F5—Nugget no. 2!—some two decades ago. A revered veteran of the bluegrass scene, Howie taught here at The Music Emporium for many years. We have all borne witness to his magisterial sound.
Tone is in the hands, to be certain, but boy, it sure does help to have a willing partner in a phenomenal mandolin. For the dedicated enthusiast, collector, or working professional, this one will get you halfway there.
