01 · Just starting out
A good first instrument is easier to play, stays in tune, and makes practice feel like progress instead of a fight. Every one of these is a guitar we'd hand a beginner without a second thought.
Taylor
Small enough for a dorm room, full enough to sound like a real guitar. Comes with a gig bag.
Fender
A short-scale bass, so it's easier on smaller hands and shorter reaches. Punchy, warm, and made in the USA.
Taylor
Designed by Taylor specifically for new players: a comfortable armrest, easy playability, and a pickup for when they want to plug in.
Fender
The Precision Bass invented the modern bass sound, and this late '60s version nails it. One volume, one tone, so a new player can plug in and go.
Taylor
Nylon strings are softer on fingertips, so the first few weeks hurt less. Lovely for classical, folk, and bossa nova.
Fender
The 70th anniversary Strat in Antigua, a finish you won't see on every stage. Alder body and a chunky '70s neck that feels great under big chords.
Eastman
Bright, warm and easy to play, with a satisfying chop for strumming along. A mandolin they’ll keep playing long after they’ve learned the basics.
Deering
For the one who wants to play something different. Light, easy to learn on, and built in the USA.
Fender
The bass behind decades of Motown and soul records, in vintage Sonic Blue. A first bass they'll never outgrow.
Cordoba
A solid cedar top with solid rosewood back and sides, for the warm, round tone classical players love. A real step up for a serious nylon-string student.
Fender
A nod to the quirky catalog guitars that started garage bands, built to actually play well. Three gold foil pickups on a warm mahogany body.
Round it out: a D'Addario Humidipak keeps a new acoustic safe through a New England winter, and a Taylor capo opens up hundreds of songs.
02 · Lifetime instruments
If you want to swing for the fences, start here. Handbuilt electrics, acoustics and mandolins, new and vintage: the kind of instrument that becomes part of their story and gets handed down.
Collings
Collings' take on the classic semi-hollow, with a slimmer '60s neck and Ron Ellis humbuckers. Rich, powerful and endlessly playable.
Fender
One of only two built to our spec by Fender Master Builder Dennis Galuszka. A '60s Tele Custom they'll never see on anyone else's stage.
Fender
A real 1965 Telecaster in blonde. Not a reissue: the original every reissue is chasing.
Gibson
An early 1965 Gibson thinline hollowbody from a pivotal year at the factory. Light, lively and full of character.
Collings
A Traditional series Collings OM with an Adirondack spruce top, from the shop that is Collings' largest dealer in the world.
Froggy Bottom
Originally sold here, and nearly two decades of playing have opened up its voice. A touch wider and deeper than an OM, with power to spare under a flatpick.
Martin
A 1956 Martin with a story: one owner from 1960 on, and decades of playing in its voice. The kind of guitar that gets handed down.
Santa Cruz
Built to Tony Rice's own specs with Brazilian rosewood and a German spruce top. Rich, warm and surprisingly easy to play.
Collings
A varnish-finished Collings F5 with birdseye maple and Italian spruce. Powerful and sweet, at home in bluegrass or classical.
Northfield
The top of Northfield's line, developed with Mike Marshall. Loar-inspired bracing for bluegrass punch and a soaring high end.
Givens
A rare Bob Givens F5 with a raw, throaty chop and a fast, narrow V neck. Old school before there was a school.
Collings
An A-style Collings inspired by 1910s Gibsons, with a slightly wider neck and a big, open voice. Made for folk, Celtic and roots players.
