Mad Professor Royal Blue Overdrive

Transparent overdrive with an amp-voiced tone stack, working as a clean EQ at one end of the dial and full distortion at the other.

Overdrive pedals and amplifiers spend a lot of time arguing with each other. The pedal has an opinion about where the highs and lows belong, the amp has a different one, and you end up turning knobs on both until you find something that works. The Royal Blue takes another approach. There is very little filtering in the overdrive itself, and the tone controls are placed where they work alongside your amp rather than on top of it.

The treble is a shelving boost and cut operating in roughly the range where a presence control sits on most amplifiers, so you can add shimmer to an already-bright amp without piling onto its treble circuit. The bass shelves in just above the resonance of a standard 4x12. Turn both up and you get a scooped, heavy voice. Bring both down and you land on a soft mid-forward tone instead. At the lowest distortion setting the overdrive steps out of the way entirely and the pedal works as a straight EQ, which earns it a spot on a board even when gain is not what you are after.

The distortion control covers real ground, from light breakup well into distortion. Set it where the breakup is right on the edge and the pedal does what a good boutique amp does: how hard you hit the strings decides how much you get. Roll your guitar volume back and it cleans up. That responsiveness is the whole point, and it transfers to any clean or lightly driven amp you put it in front of.
