“There’s no short cut to experience, and no short cut in any instrument I make.“
~ Ellis Hahn
Ellis Hahn's path to building under his own name is one of the more quietly impressive in contemporary lutherie. What began as an apprenticeship at a Chicago repair shop in 2002 led three years later to a position at Sadowsky Guitars in New York City - widely regarded as one of the finest lutherie shops in the country.
Over 16 years, Ellis moved from fret work and body sanding to final assembly to shop manager, building upward of a thousand instruments along the way. That depth of experience is not something that can be shortcut.
The LEH Offset - completed in 2018 and the instrument that defined the line - was conceived from the ground up to bring together every improvement Ellis had spent years developing: a repeatable, refined platform that honors the Fender-influenced tradition while standing confidently on its own terms.
In 2021, he left Sadowsky and moved west to build LEH full time. The work since has spoken for itself. Players include Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wayne Krantz - to name but a few) and Colin Greenwood (Radiohead).
A Thousand Instruments Before His Own Name Went on One
Ellis Hahn built upward of a thousand instruments during his 16-year tenure at Sadowsky Guitars before LEH became his full-time focus. That depth of experience - spanning fret work, final assembly, and shop management at one of the most respected lutherie operations in the country - is embedded in every decision he makes at the bench. These are not the instruments of someone still finding their footing.
The Offset: A Fender-Inspired Design Rethought from the Ground Up
The LEH Offset wasn't designed to replicate the classic Fender building tradition - it was designed to evolve it. Every improvement Ellis had spent years developing and refining during his time at Sadowsky found its way into this instrument: a repeatable, refined platform that honors its influences while standing confidently on its own terms.
West Coast Independence, East Coast Roots
Having spent the formative years of his career in Chicago and New York, Ellis relocated west in 2021 to build LEH full time - bringing with him a builder's sensibility shaped by two of the most demanding lutherie environments in the country. The result is an instrument line with serious urban craft credibility and the focused clarity that only comes from building on your own terms.
