If you're into high performance cars - and of course, guitars - you should check this beauty out. A stellar example of Ron Thorn's work.
California based Ron Thorn, former Principal Master Builder at Fender's Custom Shop, is well-known in the boutique guitar world for his creative, extremely well made solid body electric guitars under his former company's name, Thorn Guitars. Which is to say, the man knows (more than) a thing or two about making world-class instruments.
This 2014 SoCal G/T was made for a customer who used to work for Jaguar Cars (check the 12th fret inlay - very cool). To that end, this guitar is all about capturing the "high performance" vibe of a high-powered, sleek, sexy sports car: black finish, carbon fiber pickguard, 10-14" radius on an all Indian Rosewood neck, Thorn's rock solid "Precision Lock" neck joint, locking / staggered tuners (no string tree), 22 frets, and Ron's highly regarded P90/Tele bridge pickup and a replaced Lollar Firebird pickup in the neck position (original neck P90 not included in the sale).
The Fender bridge plate and saddles were original to the build - a favor called into Stephen Stern by Ron before Ron was hired by the Custom Shop. Pretty cool, right?
The real highlight (for us at least)? The Thorn "Staple" P90 in the bridge position. Clarity, fatness, upper midrange chime, a sweet and never harsh top end...think Tele crossed with an LP Special. Played clean, this guitar has a clear, muscular articulate tone. When pushed with some gain? Remember that car theme, right? Take that Jag on the highway and gun it - it's a bit like that. That's where the LP Special-isms show themselves - great midrange snarl added to the articulate mix. Beautiful, inspiring stuff.
