Slaman Jazz Pauletta 'Louise' (USED, 2019)
TME regulars, you know. We seem to have and endless stream of amazing instruments pass through our shop. To be completely honest, we feel incredibly fortunate that this is the case with our small shop. Prized vintage pieces, rare boutique pieces....it really covers every aspect of enthusiast driven guitar nerdom.
Even with the drool-worthy array of instruments we see regularly, sometimes an instrument comes in that truly knocks us flat-out. Like a left hook you didn't see coming, they possess the ability to really grab you by the shoulders and give you a slap upside the head with their uniqueness, musicality, and ability to inspire a hearty - "Yes!! Brilliant. Why has this never existed before?!"
We'd like to introduce you to one such instrument by Netherlands-based master builder, Daniel Slaman. If you're a "jazzer", you already know this name. For anyone else, Daniel builds guitars for the one and only Pat Metheny. I mean....what else do you need to hear?
This Jazz Pauletta 'Louise' from 2019 is a remarkable instrument. Hell, it even smells amazing (its body is made from Cedar). In short? It's designed to achieve archtop guitar tone and feel with a solid body guitar.
"The solid-body is designed for those who love old school jazz and blues sounds but want to have it in a smaller package than a hollow body archtop guitar. Made with (for a solid body guitar) non-traditional lightweight woods like spruce, South American cedar, redwood. And that one unmistakingly discriminating factor........ a Charlie Christian pickup with the big magnets in the neck position.
On top of that, a wooden bridge and a handmade trapeze 250 (pre-war) style tailpiece.
The Jazz Pauletta is a true solid body guitar with a central cavity for the Charlie Christian pickup. The magnets of the CC pickup are visible through the back plate. The CC pickup has unique adjustable pole pieces; authentic tone combined with modern adjustability of output for each string." ~Daniel Slaman
Said another way? Daniel has achieved a guitar that truly feels like a 60 year old instrument. It's so beautiful in looks alone, but that aesthetic translates into a guitar dripping with soul and - thanks to that aforementioned CC pickup - tone, tone, and more tone.
