"This is a guitar for electric players who don’t want to be a stereotype." ~ Andy Powers

The A-Type from Powers Electric—Andy Powers' "solo project" outside of his role as President, CEO, and Master Builder at Taylor Guitars—is a breath of fresh, Southern California air in a world of copycat guitars. Inspired by the car, surf, and music cultures he grew up around, Andy set out to design an instrument that didn’t yet exist, starting entirely from scratch—no small feat. The result? A lightweight, perfectly balanced guitar with a loud acoustic voice that’s as inspiring to play as it is innovative in design.
Everything on the A-Type is crafted in-house, from the fully enclosed, hollow body (reinforced with violin-style soundposts for resonance and sustain) to the colorful surfboard resin knobs, each uniquely patterned due to their upcycled origins. The CamTail trem/vibrato system—machined in-house—compensates for string tension, keeping chords in tune even when diving close to a whole step (ie, this isn't a Bigsby). Pair that with Andy’s custom FF42 pickups, designed for warmth, clarity, a wide dynamic response, and virtually no 60-cycle hum, and you’ve got an instrument that’s sonically versatile and incredibly fun to play.
So, how does it feel and sound? In a word: incredible. The asymmetrical fingerboard radius makes for smooth, expressive bends, while the guitar's balance and touch sensitivity make every note feel rewarding. Whether played clean or overdriven, the A-Type delivers beautifully articulate tones—proof that Andy Powers has redefined what an electric guitar can be.
