The A-Type from Powers Electric - Andy Powers’ solo venture outside his role as Taylor Guitars’ head designer and CEO - is a breath of fresh Southern California air in a world of copycats. Inspired by the cars, surf, and music of his youth, Andy set out to build the guitar he always wanted but couldn’t find. That meant starting from scratch - no small feat.

Every part of the A-Type is crafted in-house, limiting production but ensuring precision. The slim, fully hollow body contains dual soundposts (like a violin) which enhance resonance and sustain while minimizing feedback.

Details like colorful surfboard resin knobs and trem bar caps (no two are alike), and the custom “CamTail” vibrato system reflect Powers’ inventive spirit. The CamTail holds tuning through pitch changes and can be locked or adjusted for floating vibrato.

Pickup-wise, Andy’s original FF42 (warmer, with a hot rod-inspired engine-turned top) and PF42 (brighter, with a matching pickguard aesthetic) cover a wide tonal range. Add in an asymmetrical fingerboard radius (flatter on the treble side for easier bends) and you’ve got a truly original instrument, inside and out.
