Martin D-28 (USED, 1961)

This 1961 Martin D-28 is a great way to jump into the vintage guitar market without the steep price tags found on slightly earlier models. And to our ears, there isn't a whole lot of difference in the sound. Nor should there be. Martin didn't make any significant design or build changes until a couple of years after this model was built. We still have superior quality Brazilian rosewood, hide glue construction, small maple bridge plate. And production numbers at this time weren't much greater than a few years prior. And you can hear it in the sound: big, brilliant, penetrating, open and with tons of sustain and overtones.

Why We Love This

The condition is quite nice for a 1961. The bridge looks to be replaced and there's a small bridge plate extension over the original maple plate; the neck has some evidence of overspray but not egregious. The body too seems to have some overspray but minimal. There's a very fine witness line on the lower bout extending from the right of the high E-string that is possibly a repaired crack but there are no cleats, no glue lines and it's super tight. Normal finish checking shows in various places but subtle and of course, the tuners are new Waverly brand (original Grovers are in the case).
