This 1939 Martin 0-18 was made early enough in the year that it retains the wider fingerboard width (1 3/4" at the nut) and string spacing (2 5/16" at the saddle) most commonly associated with "Golden Era" pre-war Martins. It also happens to be in particularly excellent condition; and it sounds amazing. Although it's a rear-X guitar, it's got more bass & tone per pound than anything else in the showroom--and the midrange is exceptionally warm & full (even amongst pre-war Martins). In short, if you're in the market for a 14-fret pre-war 0-sized Martin, this one gets our highest possible commendations for sound and cleanliness.
Condition: There's a minor side crack on the treble side, lower bout, which has been repaired. The top and back show the expected signs of playwear, including a small scattering of scrapes and dings. Other than that, there's very little to report. The original finish is still bright & shiny. All structural components are original and clean, with the exception of a new bone saddle. The action measures 3/32" (bass side) and 2/32" (treble side) under tension of light gauge strings. And while the saddle likely doesn't allow for further lowering of the action, no such measure is necessary at this time--the guitar plays beautifully with minimal neck relief. Price includes non-original hard case.
