The impressive new Corvair from master builder Scott Heatley has quite a few tricks up its sleeve.

One of the things we've always appreciated about great art, music, etc...is when something unique crosses your path and it makes you stop and ask yourself: "Is this cool? Do I like this? Hmm." You have to live with it, study it, and let your biases fall away in order to "get it".

We had this very experience when we first encountered Scott Heatley's new Corvair model - mainly because we're so used to seeing his Parisienne and Beaumont models. The Corvair is somehow more modern than those two models but it definitely shares the hallmarks of every Heatley we've played: exceptional craftsmanship, playability, balance, aesthetic, and tone.

What's so cool about the Corvair - aside from the incredible details (dig those pickup covers up close!) - is the playing experience. In hand the Corvair feels (physically) like a short scale guitar - think Fender Jaguar - but it's actually a 25 1/2" scale, Scott has just moved the bridge back on the body. He's also arched the top of the offset body which creates better balance and makes volume and tone knob manipulation a breeze.

The beautifully grained Wenge fingerboard is framed by equally stunning tortoise binding and the satin finished maple neck (a proprietary 3-oil finish) is damned near perfect carve-wise (we'd be heard pressed to think of a player that wouldn't find this neck comfy). The string feel reminds us a bit of great Tele - slightly taut - which yields a really satisfying single note snap.

Plugged in? The Wolfetone Marshallhead pickups deliver Tele-like top end and snap coupled with a sweet midrange punchiness. That is to say, you can cover a heck of a lot of ground both clean or overdriven. Overdriven, the subtle EVH vibes of the Corvair come to life in a big way (Shredder at heart? You can go there easily). A cool feature we didn't immediately notice was the tone knob's coil tap (push/pull) which adds even more colors to the palette.

Scott has proven again why he's a builder to watch - his work is simply outstanding and after spending some time with his new Corvair we can say without reservation, we "get it".
