Gibson Les Paul Custom, Cherry Sunburst (1972)
LP-Style · Vintage
This is a great example of an early 70s Custom that has survived over 50 years without so much as a new refret and some strap locks to mark any changes during an era where hot rod mods ruled the land.
Sonically, these LPCs have all the fat and articulate humbucker tone one would expect from the 'T-Top' spec pickups that were introduced in the mid/late 1960s. Paired up with the short-lived embossed logo pickup covers, it's a unique look with a familiar sound. What might be the biggest surprise we've found with this guitar is the weight. It clocks in at a mere 9lb 1oz on our scale, which for all intents and purposes is quite lightweight in the LP Custom world.
There's evidence of minor playwear throughout, with some bumps, nicks, and dings on the body, a few finish scratches on the back of the neck, and some small touchup behind the 12th fret where some finish had likely chipped out. The gold hardware has remained quite clean and intact and the plastics are in great shape. With a fast-playing neck and a great refret just performed in-house in October 2024, it's primed for many more decades of continued use.
