TME is proud to host this 1934 Gibson Jumbo ~ an iconic guitar and a landmark in what's come to be known as the slope-shouldered dreadnought category. 1934 was a benchmark year in the history of the acoustic guitar. C.F. Martin unveiled its new 14-fret dreadnought models, and Gibson countered with the Jumbo. Boasting a 15 3/4" wide lower bout, round-shouldered contours, Red Spruce top, Mahogany back & sides, and X-bracing with two unscalloped tone bars, the Jumbo produces a thunderous, midrangey wallop that stands in contrast to the more "scooped" sound of a D-18. The Jumbo is lightly built & braced, with a full-feeling, V-shaped neck profile, making it effortlessly responsive to a light touch (and a bona fide powerhouse when played aggressively). Only in production for a short window of time, the Jumbo morphed into the catalogued J-35 (losing its cool, three-toned sunburst sides and sunburst top) and "Advanced" Jumbo (which retained the Sunburst finish and added Rosewood back & sides and a fancier inlay motif to compete with Martin's D-28).
This particular Jumbo is, in our opinion, an amazing-sounding guitar. It's also weathered the years very well. There are two noticeable, repaired top cracks, which are glued internally and very stable. Someone has performed a very clean neck reset and re-fret, resulting in wonderful playability and correct saddle height. The finish shows the expected checking; and lots of hours of playtime have worn it down to bare wood in a couple areas on the top. All internal components (bracing & bridge plate) are original and in great shape. The guitar is priced with a modern Gibson hard case. On consignment; expedited shipping required.
