1954 Gibson BR-9 amplifier just into the shop!
This particular BR-9 marks the end of a six-year production run as Gibson began updating their amplifier models and lineup. Interestingly (and not surprisingly), it seems like a combination of a BR-9 and the newly released GA-9 - a larger 10" Jensen field coil speaker is in place of what would typically be an 8" Jensen, and a 6SJ7 metal tube is used in place of the BR-9's 6SN7. Leave it up to Gibson to keep you on your toes with amp specs!
Lovingly and carefully restored by Boston-area amp tech Roy Goode, this BR-9 is running incredibly quiet at idle and operating as great as you'll ever find one. The tone is very smooth and clear, and the amp doesn't really starting breaking up much until about halfway through the volume sweep (dependent on you pickups). It makess for an excellent studio or home amp!
It may go without saying, but Gibson amps from the 50s still continue to offer some of the best value in vintage.
