The Sonar is an incredibly versatile guitar that draws design cues from a range of iconic instruments, yet feels utterly unique - and is a blast to play.
If you're a player who loves both Gibson SGs and Fender Jazzmasters—and you need an instrument that excels in both conventional and creative, extended-technique playing—the Sonar feels tailor-made for you.
From its cool “student model” aesthetics to the Mastery bridge and tremolo, Frank Brothers/McNelly-made V.O. humbuckers, and a trio of control switches (humbucker splits for each pickup and a blower switch), the Sonar encourages you to think outside the box and get creative.
What’s most impressive is how it balances impeccable craftsmanship with undeniable vibe. This guitar is a joy to play—never feeling sterile or overbuilt—yet the build quality is on par with the finest instruments in our shop. Achieving this harmony between soul and precision is no easy feat, but the Sonar nails it.
Staying true to the student model vibe, the Slim "C" neck profile (.82-.90”), 9 1/2" radius, and 25 1/2" scale make this guitar incredibly easy to play, with a Fender-like feel that will be familiar to most players.
Plugged into our Carr Sportsman, the V.O. humbuckers deliver fantastic clean tones, and the coil-tap switches boost versatility. By mixing single-coil and humbucker settings, you can dial in the perfect tones for a wide range of gigs or recording sessions.
The blower switch is a great tool for players who like to ride their volume and tone controls. It bypasses those controls entirely, sending the signal straight from the pickups to the amp. This means you can roll the volume down for clean, quiet sections, then flip the blower switch for an instant boost in volume and gain. It’s fun, practical, and incredibly useful!

As the Frank Brothers' first dealer in 2016—thanks to a glowing recommendation from Toronto-based master builder Joseph Yanuziello—we recognized right away that these guitars were something special.
Joseph’s impeccable craftsmanship and discerning eye for quality have always guided our choices, and the Frank Brothers' instruments lived up to every expectation.
