Fender Jazzmaster, Sunburst (1964)
Vintage
A superb sounding and playing example of Fender's flagship offset, this '64 Jazzmaster is every player's dream. Amazing pickups and a near-perfect neck carve with a wonderful refret puts this at the top of the list of guitars in our shop that are really getting us worked up.
Why We Love This
1964 Fender Jazzmaster just into the shop! This pre-CBS offset came from a local gentleman who owned it for 50+ years. There was some mild apprehension on the part of the previous owner to let it go, be it sentimental or otherwise. While we can't comment on the sentimentality, we can definitely relate to having difficulty letting go of a truly great sounding and playing guitar. In just a minute or two of playing this Jazzmaster, we realized why this one stayed put for half a century. With its fantastic playing late '63 neck that's been professionally refretted and the absolutely stellar sounding set of original pickups, this is one of those Jazzmasters that redefines what these instruments are capable of. The neck pickup has a bold low end with great warmth, all while maintaining excellent clarity. The bridge pickup has excellent output with some serious chime that reminds us of a great Strat pickup, but with a deeper overall response.
The previous owner had the body refinished in 1993 by a local area luthier who also performed the refret at the same time. The frets are of the medium jumbo variety and offer excellent playability. The neck has one of the richest, darkest Brazilian Rosewood fingerboards we've seen on a vintage Fender!
The pickguard, knobs, bridge, vibrato, and tuners are all original to the guitar. The Lead circuit toggle switch was replaced at some time, but the original is included in the case. The volume pot was also replaced with a CTS pot dating from mid-1983, but the original Stackpole tone pot dating from the 21st week of 1964 remains. The grey bottom pickups show date stamps of June 1964 as well, with all of the original lead tape intact.
Includes original vintage 'no logo' Fender Jazzmaster hardshell case.
