1963 Epiphone Coronet just into the shop!
This is one of the better early 60s Coronets we've encountered, primarily attributed to the neck carve. During a period where Gibson slimmed out the neck profiles on many of their electrics, this Coronet is a true exception. We'd describe the neck carve to be a hybrid of the '58 and '59 profiles - '59 in the first position tapering up to more of a chunky '58 in the 12th fret area, it defies the prototypical slim taper.
When combined with the slim, lightweight Mahogany body and a strong original P90 pickup, you can imagine just how satisfying this guitar is to play. Similar to the SG Junior, you have that perfect amount of midrange bark and top end cut that make these such formidable rock guitars. There's no wonder the likes of Steve Marriott found his voice in Humble Pie with such a model.
This Coronet has been around, but not overly abused nor heavy modified as was common for 60s Epiphones. It did experience a minor headstock fracture at one point, but a quality repair (mainly some proper glue and clamping) has it functioning strong as ever. Otherwise, the neck heel and tenon area is solid, and the original Cherry finish remains unaltered.
The electronics work great, with a pair of original Centralab pots tied to the original P90 pickup. Given the date codes on the pots, there's a possibility that the knobs are original to the guitar. These knobs started to show up on most Epiphone solidbodies by early 1964, replacing the more common "reflector" style that Gibson was using on their electrics. They're much harder to come by than the reflector knob, we can assure you that!
The original frets took to a light dressing without issue, and playability is very nicely dialed in thanks to the installation of a MojoAce CWT-60 wraparound bridge. The original lightning bar wraparound bridge is included should you want to explore stringing it up with a wound G string set.
Late 50s playability with early 60s design? It doesn't happen very often, folks! This one is sure to get snagged quickly!
