UK-based luthier Clive Brown has built a reputation as being one of the best in the business when it comes to vintage guitar refinishing and restoration. He also builds exceptional guitars under the Dwight brand name, which has its origins in early Kalamazoo-made Epiphones built for Sonny Shields Music in Illinois in the early/mid 1960s.
Clive's builds encompass the experimental nature of early Epiphone solidbodies in some ways, and offer unique takes on classic Gibson models in other ways. All this to be said - his work is fantastic! In this rare instance we're thrilled to offer a unique Dwight...and it is NOT built in the style of a Gibson!
This Dwight Telecaster was completed in 2019 and is the only Fender-style build we've ever come across. Built in the style of an early Blackguard tele, its features are right on point, from the slothead screws to the chunky neck profile, flatpole bridge pickup, and bakelite pickguard.
It's very lightweight at just over 6.5 lbs with loads of acoustic energy and liveliness. The neck carve is superb - a robust V carve with a lean taper that is super comfortable to play. The pickups have a classic early 1950s voice - woody, bright, and clear with a distinctive twang and bounce to the tone.
It's clear that Clive has a keen eye for delivering an authentically aged guitar, as this build presents about as close to the real thing as you'll come across (Nacho Banos would likely agree!). Luckily, the playability and tone match the look to create one stellar tele.
