Over the past few years, we've looked at ways where we could give reverence to vintage guitars through the modern lens of Collings craftsmanship. Whether it's just a classic model with a classic look, or an artist-owned six-string with a unique identity, there's something about having a new guitar in your hand that pays homage to the past without feeling like it's derivative of, or just a straight up copy. Needless to say, the folks at Collings get us...
This brand new City Limits Deluxe Custom was spec'ed out back in the heat of the pandemic, with a really cool guitar used as inspiration - Mick Ronson's 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom. The original guitar - a Black Beauty - was stripped in 1970 by Mick, leaving the guitar "in the nude" with its fairly plain Maple top. The result may have be less striking, but the importance of the guitar remained, and became a part of Mick's history in music, particularly with David Bowie.
This City Limits Deluxe takes those cues and brings them forward with a certain elegance and refinement we've come to expect from Collings. Boy oh boy, did they come through in a big way! The Maple top has some beautiful wide flame in the figure, and combined with the aged gold hardware and black plastics, it has some really nice aesthetic dimension.
Outfitted with a pair of Lollar Imperial humbuckers, the City Limits packs some great punch along with an airiness and clarity that's made them go-to PAF style humbuckers for over two decades now. Weighing in under 8.5lbs, it's about as light as you'll find this style of build these days. Collings is so consistent when it comes to guitar weight - we're not shocked in the least that this CL came through weighing within a couple ounces of its fellow CL peers.
This isn't a spec you're sure to come across every day, and we love that about this CL! Its individuality mirrors that of Ronson's old LP, and continues to inspire us to explore more builds with that in mind.
