1966 Ampeg B-15N Portaflex just in!
This is a gorgeous and original example of perhaps the most famous bass amplifier ever made. Used on countless recordings across many genres of music from the 60s, 70s, and beyond, the B-15 almost single-handedly defined the sound of electric bass.
This B-15N represents the last variant of the Portaflex model, also known as the B-15NF. Its fixed bias power section and single baffle cabinet construction pushed the amps 30 watts with a bit more clean headroom and tighter, more defined response.
The amp was originally purchased at EU Wurlitzer in Boston new back in late '66 or early '67 according to its original owner. Outside of some servicing early on by Boston-area amp tech Aztech Electronics (back when they worked out of their original location), it remained essentially untouched, with most of its original tubes still present.
We tasked Stan Day with doing its first proper service in over 40 years, which included all of the routine maintenance (recap, 3 prong cord) as well as a new set of power and preamp tubes. The original handle had also dry rotted and was taped up, so Stan procured a proper Ampeg replacement handle. Otherwise, it presents just as it would have from Wurlitzer back in the late 60s!
The checkered blue covering remains in great overall condition thanks to the use of the original slipcover. The chrome plating of the chassis is very clean, with all lettering still very much intact. The original CTS 15" speaker is very healthy and sounds wonderful as well.
It probably goes without saying, but the B-15 is one of those amplifiers that will never fade into obsolescence. It remains a true classic in the guitar world, and a clean, working example is a studio's dream amp!
