A future classic from one of the modern greats.
When a master luthier like Ron Thorn swings for the fences, you know it’s going to be special. And in our eyes, this 2024 Florantine Emperial is nothing short of a future classic. Just like we now chase vintage D’Angelicos and D’Aquistos, we can already imagine what this guitar will look, feel, and sound like 50 years from now - that’s the kind of legacy Ron is building.
If you're new to his work: Ron launched Thorn Custom Inlay in 1996, which quickly became the exclusive inlay provider for the Fender Custom Shop, a relationship he still maintains today. He founded Thorn Guitars in 2000, where he built a reputation for exquisitely made electrics that blended traditional elegance with cutting-edge precision.
Ron’s mastery of CNC technology gave him the tools to push design boundaries while still delivering instruments with soul. Like any tool, it’s all in how you use it, and Ron’s guitars prove that meticulous, expressive craftsmanship isn’t limited to hand tools alone.
After serving as both a Masterbuilder and head of the Fender Custom Shop, Ron has returned to the helm of Thorn Guitars, and the Florantine Emperial is proof he’s only getting better.
From its deco-inspired appointments, which include - custom ebony knobs, pickup surrounds, tailpiece, fingerboard inlays, a gorgeous pickguard - to its shimmering finish and tailored proportions, this guitar is visually breathtaking. But looks are just the beginning.
The Florantine is a player’s guitar through and through. The comfortably chunky Fat '59 neck profile (.89-98") is perfectly shaped, matched by a superb fret job and rolled fretboard edges that makes every note feel effortless. Plugged in, the korina body/carved curly maple top/short scale length delivers punchy, fat and articulate tones whether clean or overdriven - with a refined voice that leans into ES-335 territory, but with even more sophistication and dynamic range. Truthfully, every guitar we've ever played with Ron Ellis pickups sounds remarkable - this one is no exception.
Don't let its classy exterior fool you - this is not a timid guitar. It roars through a cranked tube amp, sustaining beautifully and remaining articulate even at the edge of breakup.
If you’re in the market for a modern heirloom - something that will age with grace and remain inspiring for decades to come - this might just be the one.
Give it a spin. You won’t be disappointed.
