This Martin "Foden Special" has just arrived for consignment! Produced in limited quantities between 1911 and 1917, the Foden Special was the result of a collaboration between C.F. Martin and guitarist / teacher, William Foden, who commissioned the line in order to supply his students with what he believed were the finest instruments available. The Foden Specials were available in 0 and 00 sizes, with several different stylistic trim options. This is a "Style D," featuring Martin's style-30 top purfling, pearl rosette, and ivory binding. It's a 00-sized body, light as air, and absolutely enormous sounding.
For a guitar that's approximately 110 years old, we'd say this one is in great shape. Its original structure is intact and perfectly sound (although originally built for gut strings, it's been wearing a combination of .010 and .011 gauge nickel strings and exhibits no significant top belly or deflection). An area of playwear near the treble side of the soundhole has been finished over by hand (see photos); and the rest of the body finish has been buffed to a shine. The back of the neck exhibits minor dings associated with normal playwear and capo use. Freshly setup in our shop, it plays easily with no need for any repair or work at this time. The sound is, quite simply, sublime.
On consignment, and priced with a modern tweed hard case. Payment requested by check or wire transfer. Expedited shipping required.
