This Growler might tip the scale as a featherweight, but its tone is all heavyweight.
If ever there was a specific build that personified its model name to the fullest extent, it would be this very guitar. With its chambered Spanish Cedar body, tight-grained Douglas Fir top, and a pair of killer sounding humbuckers with a wraptail bridge to boot, this Growler is a total beast!
Upon picking it up for the first time, there's no denying that it fits right into the weight class that includes the Collings I-30LC, Grez Mendocino, and a few other modest-sized fully hollow thinline electrics. But wait - it's not a fully hollow instrument! The chambered body - an almost constant in the Healy construction style - makes this Growler practically float away, yet it's still rather stout in its response and feel.
A pair of Nate Lord's LAF humbuckers with "zebra" bobbins bring some excellent vintage-voiced PAF punch to the forefront. Although we're not entirely new to Nate's pickups, this is the first humbucker set we've heard, and we love how they sound! Add in the MojoAxe wraparound bridge and you get a bit more fundamental attack and clarity, opening up the top end response of the guitar. Remember how we said this guitar felt more stout than its weight would lead you to believe? This is basically what we were talking about. Wraptail + semi-hollow + humbuckers = power and punch with liveliness and air. We'll take some more of that any day!
Balancing familiarity with freshness is a tough task, but somehow Trevor seems to have a firm grip on the process. The combination of elevating his use of beautiful woods while pushing the sonic and tonal qualities of his guitars to new heights - all without compromising brand identity - is admirable to say the least. From the Growlers that came before to this newest 2025 build, we're reminded of just how great these guitars are.
