This is the kind of instrument that inspires you to play more. It's beautifully crafted, features a chunky, late-50's Gibson-esque neck carve with a slinky overall feel, and sounds amazing both unplugged and plugged in.
We've been working with CA-based Barry Grzebik and his wonderful Grez Guitars since 2019 and each time we take delivery of one of his guitars, it immediately becomes our favorite one....until the next one arrives...and so on.
Our newest Mendocino DC (double cut) with Novak lipstick pickups and beautiful tortoise and ebony appointments might just be our fave. At the very least, this guitar embodies everything we love about Barry's work - it's crazy lightweight (5lbs 6oz), balances beautifully, is effortless to play, and sounds incredible plugged in.
Old tone woods coupled with an ultra-thin matte finish - along with a healthy dose of Barry's former experience as the VP of Engineering for Apogee Sound designing digital signal processors, powers amplifiers, and critically acclaimed professional loudspeakers - creates a guitar that feels alive in your hands. Even just brushing the top produces musical results - the wood feels, and sounds, old and super responsive.
The neck carve on the Mendocino DC is slightly chunky and comfortably narrow feeling - which is to say, unless you're super specific about your neck carves, most any play will be right at home on this guitar. There's little "fight" in playing it with the overall feel being on the slinky side (which we really like).
As if you need much more reason to try a Grez, Barry is a part of an organization that replants a tree for each guitar sold (as old-growth redwood factors heavily into most Grez guitars). Great builder, good human? We're in!
