Why We Love This

Every time we get a guitar from Barry Grzebik of Grez Guitars we're tempted to say it's the most unique one, and we mean that sincerely. His guitars are always interesting and no two are ever quite the same. This gorgeous Mendocino is another in that lineage - and that's saying something considering the CA-based builder is known for building some gorgeous instruments.

There are several things that make this Mendocino unique, starting with the most eye-catching use of flamed maple for the pickguard, humbucker surround, and tailpiece overlay. We've never seen a Mendocino with a tailpiece like this and think it looks incredible paired with the lightly bursted redwood top. In addition to the use of flame maple, flamed koa is used for the body and binding and it is equipped with a Lollar Firebird pickup (in a humbucker size) which delivers some pretty authentic Johnny Smith-like tones.

So, looks and specs aside, the Mendocino is simply the kind of instrument that makes you want to play more. It's beautifully made, has a chunky, late-50's Gibson-esq carve with a slinky overall feel, and sounds amazing both unplugged and plugged in. It's also incredibly lightweight due to its chambered construction.
