The Santa Cruz Vintage Artist was born of Richard Hoover's collaboration with Doc Watson and renowned vintage Martin experts to identify the most desirable qualities of a Martin pre-War D-18. The resulting model was, in Doc's words, "the dreadnought [he'd] been looking for all of his life." And while it's a tall order to outdo an iconic 1930's D-18, the VA captures much of the essence of that model, without the unreachable price tag. And this used VA from 2012 brings that number to within even greater reach.
When considering the level of figure on this mahogany VA, one might think it was built from the legendary Tree wood. Wavy and rippling, the mahogany back and sides are exceptional in their look and tone. The Adirondack top upgrade (standard models have Sitka) elevate the power and clarity even further. Condition is excellent with not much wear to note other than one finish ding on the top lower treble bout. Playability is dialed in for light bluegrass style but a more aggressive player may want it raised.
