Dark Period
Fans of visual art will no doubt be familiar with concept of monochromatic painting - think Picasso's Blue Period or Mark Rothko's work, for example. Artists have utilized this reductive formula of focusing on a single color or hue for over a century to delve into the possibilities (and boundaries) of their chosen medium. Monochrome provides a unique platform for experimenting with different formal elements and conceptual ideas, making it a versatile tool for artistic exploration.
Dark Period
As a former art school student, it's no surprise that Glenn Nichols would find himself naturally gravitating to this concept at some point with his own guitar builds. We just took delivery of a gorgeous pair of one-off models from what Glenn has slyly dubbed his Dark Period, which we take to partly be a reflection of life events, and partly an exploration of what can occur when one limits themselves to a single hue in their work. For us? The results are anything but dark. Take a close look at the subtle details and how they pop when juxtaposed with a black top...just gorgeous work, but we'd expect no less from Glenn. His work is consistently beautiful, creative, and musical - like all great art.

Aptly named The Rosedale, this 30s/40s style archtop stands at the crossroads of acoustic and electric guitar.

Why We Love This

"The Rosedale model introduces a more acoustic element to my Retrograde lineup.

After extensive experimentation with the lamination process, I feel confident in controlling the tap tone of the vacuum pressed plates. Mahogany, spruce, and maple are used in different pairings throughout the construction to create a clear and woody tone. Hand carved German spruce bracing, a traditional dovetail neck joint, and classical inspired sound ports all add to the overall acoustic resonance of the guitar.

Visually, the design draws from the 30s & 40s archtops which were used in early country blues and jazz. Aptly named The Rosedale, it stands at the crossroads of acoustic and electric guitar."
