"It has been a long pursuit of mine to find that perfect combination of power, projection, articulation, warmth and clarity. The Ultra Glide is the closest I've come." ~Saul Koll
As the expression goes, "if you know, you know": spotting an Ultra Glide in the wild is a rarity. Seeing a brand new one? Practically unheard of. Master luthier Saul Koll only builds these top-tier instruments by custom order—and even then, they surface only every few years.
This particular Ultra Glide is a stunning example of why Saul’s work commands such respect. Built on the classic Glide body shape he designed in the ‘80s, this Dark Burst beauty features a 15" fully hollow body, carved spruce top, Big Leaf Maple back, bent sides, and trestle bracing—all coming together in an instrument that feels as refined and expressive as anything we’ve seen from Saul to date.
A quick word on trestle bracing:
Gretsch first introduced trestle bracing in the late 1950s, aiming to bridge the gap between hollow-body resonance and solid-body performance. The result?
A design that preserves the classic, airy tone of a hollow-body guitar while offering greater sustain, improved feedback control, and a more focused response a la a solid-body guitar.
Thanks to the added mass, enhanced top dampening, and stronger connection between the top and back, trestle bracing gives these guitars a feel and sound that is dynamic, controlled, and endlessly playable.
Playability-wise, this neck is a dream. The taper recalls a ‘50s Les Paul Junior—minus the bulk. Think ‘60s Fender meets LP Jr., and you’re in the ballpark. Add a 10–14" compound radius and short scale length, and the result is a feel that’s effortless, slinky, and addictive.
Plug it in, and the Arcane Triple Clone pickup paired with Saul’s build delivers a wide palette of vintage-inspired tones. It recalls the richness of a great ES-335, but airier, more dynamic, and with an acoustic resonance that elevates both clean and overdriven sounds.
Wary of Bigsby trems? Don’t be. This one’s smooth, stable, and beautifully dialed in—letting you play with more expression, without the usual tuning headaches. When a builder like Saul Koll is behind the setup, there’s really nothing to worry about—just another reason this guitar is such a joy to play.
