The Mockingbird is an incredible guitar by any measure and is perfect for players who might not be bonding with a Gibson but don't want to dip into higher priced offerings like Collings.

Aside from our "formal" roles here at The Music Emporium, we're all gear heads and are forever checking out all things guitar via our favorite mags, blogs, YouTube channels, and forums when not at work. Sound familiar?

If you too count yourself among us hopeless gear nerds, you no doubt have encountered the name Josh Williams and his stellar Mockingbird model. Players like Josh Smith, Ariel Posen, Joey Landreth, Drew Shirley, etc...have been singing Josh's praises (and gigging / recording with his guitars) which is always great to see. After receiving our first batch of Josh's guitars recently, we can see why he's been generating a buzz in the larger guitar community.

Josh's designs are based on iconic Gibson models - simply meaning, same woods, construction methods, pickup combos, etc... - but these aren't simply replicas or "knock-offs". The Mockingbird, for example, feels quite a bit more refined in-hand than its inspiration, splitting the difference between, say, a Collings and a Gibson.

Mentioning these other brands is meant to simply give you a quick idea as to what these guitars are like in-hand, not to diminish what Josh and his small team have accomplished. To be sure, the Mockingbird very much stands on its own merits via excellent build quality, playability, and tone(s). We love how it reflects '60s influences - small block inlays, trapeze tailpiece, nylon bridge saddles, reflector knobs...

Another cool atypical semi-hollow feature is the use of a P90 in the neck position and a humbucker in the bridge position. A lot of players favor a P90 in the neck position as it still delivers a fat, round tone but it doesn't venture into muddy or tubby sounds. It's a bit more taut and has a sweet top end - perfect for the neck position. The bridge pickup retains the upper-midrange bump and snarl we love in a great semi-hollow. It's a reminder of why semi-hollows have been lauded for decades for their ability to cover an unexpectedly wide range of tones.

The neck carve falls into the "most any player will find this comfortable" territory - slightly chunky but very comfortable. While it measure .89" @ the first fret, it's so well shaped it doesn't feel huge by any stretch.

You may be getting the sense that we like this guitar and you'd be 100% correct in that assumption. The Mockingbird is an incredible guitar by any measure and is perfect for players who might not be bonding with a Gibson but don't want to dip into higher priced offerings like Collings. Fantastic work, Josh & crew!
