As a homegrown independent guitar shop, The Music Emporium is all about fostering relationships that are grown from the same soil, so to speak. Working with fellow independent luthiers, builders, and small business owners is what continues to feed our excitement, our desire, and our creative energy. We absolutely LOVE sharing these relationships with the world through our little shop in Lexington, Massachusetts. The newest addition to our family couldn't align any better, really.
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to our good friend and fellow Massachusetts resident Trevor Healy and Healy Guitars! Now let's dive in on these beauties!
The Healer is the first Healy model we had ever spent any time with, and it's one of the classiest offset style designs we've seen in a modern electric. Local Massachusetts guitarist and fellow gear junkie Pete Aleksi (Ghosts Of Jupiter) put his personal Healers in our hands a few years ago, went ahead and got us hooked on these, and...well...the rest is history.
This particular Healer turned out so incredible, we've got no choice but to request a repeat build in perpetuity. My. Goodness.
Let's start with the tonewoods and finish here - hard not to, right? The solid roasted Northern Pine body serves as a wonderful foundation for this build. The two-tone Sunburst top presents as a little softer and warmer than the more typical contrast-heavy 50s sunburst we're used to seeing, and we love it! We often find that roasted woods take finish differently than non-roasted woods, and this Healer is such a great example of that. It seems to have a more dramatic effect, however, on Maple. This AAA Flame Maple neck is also roasted, and the thin matte water base finish allows the rich amber hue of the figuring to dance between soft and subdued to intense and deep. Pair this with a custom cut anodized gold pickguard, and the whole aesthetic ties together perfectly. Eye Candy Level: High.
As is the case with all of these Healys, they play and sound even better than they look.
At a 25" scale length, it sits comfortably between short-scale Gibson feel and the longer-scale Fender snap. The thinner C neck carve is a total treat to play, without feeling too thin. A smooth, even taper essentially eliminates the feel of that transition up the neck, adding a level of playability we're used to seeing on its high end electric peers a la Lentz and Grosh. The Healer neck heel is definitely one of the more thought-through designs we've encountered as well. Bolt-on or set neck, you barely notice a difference there. This is yet another testament to Trevor's dedication to his craft. Altogether, we're handling a sub-7 lb solid body electric that shares a lot of those great acoustic-like qualities of its brethren.
Now we get to plugging in...
A handwound hybrid set of Gemini P90s complement the vibe of this Healer so well. Alnico polepieces in the neck position lean more towards Jazzmaster territory - big, bold, and bright (no mud here folks!). The bridge pickup delivers more of a traditional P90 tone, with a more authoritative upper midrange and top end response. Kick things into top gear with the push/pull tone pot that introduces a series-parallel toggle. Pulled up, you're engaging the series wiring which increased volume, low end, and low midrange for a punchier, higher output tone that works really well as a lead boost without needing help from an effect pedal. It sounds incredible!
The finishing touch is the use of the Descendant Vibrato bridge and tailpiece. Elegantly designed to maximize break angle that plagues original Jazzmaster vibratos, the Descendant maintains that silky smooth vibrato feel while recovering some of the sustain that's typically lost with this style bridge. A well-executed complement to this style of build.
This is a total knockout of a guitar from tip to stern. We love every single thing about it!
Up until now, Healy Guitars have been almost exclusively built one by one for each customer on a custom order basis. 2022 marks a welcome shift for Trevor, and an exciting collaboration for us both at that. These guitars are truly special, and we're thrilled to be able to represent them here at TME!
