As a homegrown independent guitar shop, The Music Emporium is all about fostering relationships that are grown from the same soil, so to speak. Working with fellow independent luthiers, builders, and small business owners is what continues to feed our excitement, our desire, and our creative energy. We absolutely LOVE sharing these relationships with the world through our little shop in Lexington, Massachusetts. The newest addition to our family couldn't align any better, really.
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to our good friend and fellow Massachusetts resident Trevor Healy and Healy Guitars! Now let's dive in on these beauties!
The Growler shares a bit of its lineage with the slab mahogany body double cut of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but adds a level of refinement and individuality that undoubtedly sheds any notion that it's just another take on an old Gibson.
First impressions upon taking it out of its case is that it's very light. The chambered African Mahogany body is coupled with a Douglas Fir top, but not just any Douglas Fir; reclaimed Douglas Fir cut from beams originating from the Mass Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA! You'll see a pattern here, as Trevor always looks at ways to incorporate locally/regionally sourced materials into his builds.
The beautiful waterbase matte Metallic Green top finish is quite striking without being dramatic, as it allows the grain of the top to poke through while also providing depth of color and contrast against the ivoroid binding and clear matte finish of the body. As far as two-tone aesthetics go, this is one of the more unique looks we've seen, and has become somewhat of a calling card of Healy finish work.
This Growler features a medium-full C carve neck profile that's reminiscent of some of the 63/64 era Gibson neck carves, albeit it with a much smoother taper and leaner shoulders. This neck plays fast without losing some of the fullness we appreciate in bigger necked guitars. This is where we start to see (or feel, really) the fruits of Trevor's labor - neck shape and feel, fret work, and overall playability are just dialed in.
The custom wound Newburgh NY made Gemini humbuckers have a distinct voice that straddles the line between PAF and single coil - very open and clear sounding with excellent note definition and dynamic response. They remind us a little of the Lollar Low Wind Imperial humbucker but with more of the vintage warmth we associate with older pickups. As you might imagine, clean tones are intoxicatingly good. Add some gain or drive, and the harmonic content just jumps right out of the guitar. Like the Copper Growler, the chambered body coupled with the MojoAxe wraparound tailpiece adds great resonance that undoubtedly contributes to a lot of that acoustic-like energy.
Up until now, Healy Guitars have been almost exclusively built one by one for each customer on a custom order basis. 2022 marks a welcome shift for Trevor, and an exciting collaboration for us both at that. These guitars are truly special, and we're thrilled to be able to represent them here at TME!
