Fortunately for us in the guitar community, Barry Grzebik’s deep background in audio engineering and design eventually led him to lutherie, and the result is the award winning Mendocino.
Designed to live somewhere between a great ES-335 and a refined archtop, the Mendocino blends familiar semi-hollow tone with reduced weight, increased resonance, and a striking visual identity. Prior to building guitars, Barry was Director of Engineering at Apogee Sound, where he helped create acclaimed pro audio gear so it’s no surprise his instruments are this dialed in.
This Mendocino features a hollowed mahogany body with a slim center block, paired with a figured redwood top (sourced from 500–700-year-old timber). The build is lightweight (5lbs 7oz), balanced, and incredibly lively.
Tonally, the Lollar Humbuckers bring a really musical clarity and punch to the party. Clean, they’re rich and articulate - think ES-335 with a little more sparkle and breath. With gain, they open up beautifully, delivering thick, dynamic tones with plenty of bite and harmonic content. There's depth and nuance here that rewards both subtle players and those who like to dig in.
With a chunky late-’50s-style neck carve, exceptional fretwork, and a slinky overall feel, the Mendocino is the kind of guitar that’s hard to put down. Beautifully made, musical, and crafted with sustainability in mind, this is a standout piece from a builder who gets both design and soul. Priced with Reunion Blues gig bag.
