If you consider yourself a "Strat gal or guy", this is the version of the Frank Brothers Sonar that should be on your radar.
It can't be overstated how fun it is to have access to Strat-like tones in a completely different format, with different controls, etc...vs. a traditional Strat.
From the Sonar's undeniably cool “student model” aesthetics to the Mastery bridge and tremolo, McNelly-made Firebird pickups, and a trio of control switches (Mud Switch (0.0039uf) / Bridge ON / Blower), this Sonar encourages you to think outside the box and get creative, while still having access to a familiar tonal landscape (though it's an expanded landscape to be sure).
What’s most impressive is how this guitar balances impeccable craftsmanship with undeniable vibe. It's truly a joy to play—never feeling sterile or overbuilt—yet the build quality is on par with the finest instruments in our shop. Achieving this harmony between soul and precision is no easy feat, but this Sonar nails it.
Staying true to the student model vibe, the Slim "C" neck profile (.82-.90”), 9 1/2" radius, and 25 1/2" scale make this guitar incredibly easy to play, with a Fender-like feel that will be familiar to most players.
Plugged into a Carr Sportsman and a handful of pedals, the McNelly Firebird pickups deliver muscular Strat-like clean tones that morph beautifully into overdriven tones. The additional on-off switches really up the versatility and flexibility - the "mud switch" introduces a cap that shaves off a bit of treble and boosts the midrange, producing a wonderfully lo-fi / cocked wah-like tone that LOVES overdrive (players looking to get more creative w/their tones will dig this, though it can sound quite traditional if you desire).
The blower switch is a great tool for players who like to ride their volume and tone controls. It bypasses those controls entirely, sending the signal straight from the pickups to the amp. This means you can roll the volume down for clean, quiet sections, then flip the blower switch for an instant boost in volume and gain. It’s fun, practical, and incredibly useful. We're sold!
