The concept behind Fender's American Professional Stratocaster, originally launched in 2017, centered around refining and updating its core models. These updates centered around three Tim Shaw-designed "V-Mod" single-coil Stratocaster pickups, a treble bleed circuit (which maintains highs when reducing volume), and a new modern "Deep C”-shaped neck profile.

In hand, the American Pro - this one being a LTD all-rosewood neck version - indeed feels like a more modern, updated Strat, but it hasn't forgotten its vintage roots. The highlight, aside from the satin finished, ultra-comfy rosewood neck, are undoubtedly the Tim Shaw designed pickups which take an interesting approach to mixing/matching magnet types. Here's Tim in a Guitar.com interview back in 2017...

"Each alnico alloy has its own tone due to the chemical composition of the magnets, and I decided to try mixing materials within individual pickups. On a Strat, for instance, it’s important to have each pickup sound good, but the unique character of positions two and four has to be preserved as well.

So the neck pickup has alnico II for the wound strings and alnico III for the trebles. The middle pickup has alnico II for the basses and alnico V for the trebles, and the bridge pickup has alnico V all the way across. We also adjusted and voiced the magnet wire on the individual coils so that the whole set worked well as a system, and added a model-specific treble-bleed circuit as well."

Plugged in, this approach yields an incredibly expressive, balanced take on the classic Strat tones. The wound strings exhibit a nice snap and twang and the unwound strings sound clear, yet fatter...it's an inspiring guitar to sit down with and this tweaks are noticeable and appreciated.
