With as many amazing guitars as we've had come through the doors from our great friends at Collings, you'd think we'd have worked through all of the conceivable variations that can be brought to life in their instruments. Then we get a guitar like this City Limits coming through and redefining those ideals.
This City Limits Custom in Aged Blonde finish is another one of those concepts drafted up here at TME and brought to life by that amazing team in Austin, blending some vintage sensibilities with modern design, aesthetic, and consistency in build quality that is nearly unparalleled today.
We wanted to showcase some of the higher-grade appointment treatments that tortoise can really do to elevate a guitar's presentation, while keeping the bones of the guitar a little more simplified and vintage-leaning. Elegant simplicity is at the forefront here with this CL, and it's masterfully achieved.
Another first for us - outfitting the guitar with Throbak Koss-301s - takes that aforementioned vintage leaning idea and brings it right to the top of the tone heap. They're voiced very accurately based on Paul Kossof's original PAFs from his 'Burst. Long A2 magnet construction yields a slightly spongier, springier response with great touch-sensitivity and dynamics.
Weighing in at just over 8lbs on our scale, it's an incredibly well-balanced solidbody that weighs less than many vintage semi-hollow electrics. It's a special CL, and we think you'll agree!
