We've really been into the idea of taking the hot rodded vintage electric concept and having uber-talented builders - like the folks at Collings - deliver a fresh and modern twist on it. This new 290 has us shaking in our knees with the results!
Born out of the idea of having an old mid/late 50s Gibson LP Special modded for humbuckers, this 290 aims at capturing that slab Mahogany body tone with the bigger, clearer, and sweeter tones of the early PAF humbucker pickups. There's no better offering for this than the Throbak KZ-115 humbuckers. Coupled with the Mahogany body and MojoAxe wraparound tailpiece, this is a 290 that rewards the player with incredible dynamic response and frequency range, and an increased immediacy of attack and fundamental power.
No one does a Doghair finish better than Collings, and what better way to showcase that finish than on this 290. The minimal appointments allow the finish to truly shine while also giving it the vintage nod, and yet there's a sleekness to it that presents as pseudo-modern. This is where the idea of old school and new school collide, highlighting one another to provide something special.
As always, fit and finish is second to none. A Collings guitar will spoil you that way; there's a level of refinement and consistency few builders are able to maintain quite like our friends from Austin, TX. Feel, playability, ergonomics, and weight combine to make one truly capable guitar. We have a strong feeling we'll be revisiting this spec down the line. What a guitar!
