Why We Love This
b3 is constantly experimenting with subtle tweaks to their line-up, never comfortable to rest on their laurels and stamp out the same guitar over and over. Lately, they've built a handful of "drum top" Phoenix models, and we're thrilled to have gotten 2 thus far - the most recent being this killer Black Moto drum top Phoenix VII.
Let's start with the obvious - the top. Unlike other Phoenix models that have a raised center section a la a Gibson Firebird, the drum top guitars are totally flat like a traditional Telecaster.
Drum top?
The Black Moto top on this Phoenix V is a very thin veneer that is similar to what Gretsch or Ludwig use on their drum kits. The results are stunning, and fear not, it doesn't negatively impact the tone in any way, it just looks amazing, especially pared with the subtle burst on the back and neck.
From the super comfy Standard C (.83"-.96") neck carve to the fast neck-through heel construction, to the gorgeous sounding Lollar pickups (Special T and low wind Imperial humbucker) with a versatile wiring scheme (volume, tone - push/pull, 3-way), to the rock solid hardware and beautiful finish work, it's familiar yet versatile and 100% soulful and inspiring.
If you're in the market for a high-performance, modern leaning guitar with lots of gorgeous and creative appointments that's still got vintage vibe, feel, tone, and attitude? This is your guitar! An amazing guitar, period.
