Product information

Reclaimed redwood, Lollar Charlie Christian pickups, and a semi-hollow body that goes from archtop warmth to Steve Cropper spank without breaking a sweat.

We started working with Barry Grzebik and his wonderful Grez Guitars back in 2019 after checking out his work at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville. That's pre-pandemic folks, ie, lifetimes ago! In that time, we've had dozens of his instruments pass through our shop, each one as cool as the last - yet - each one has something unique about it. And, that, is the magic of his acclaimed Mendocino model.

Much like Teles and Strats, the semi-hollow Mendocino makes for an ideal platform for experimentation. We've had them with Gold Foils, Humbuckers, single pickups (both neck and bridge only versions), baritones, etc...you name it, we've probably had it.

The version we have here is what you might consider his "standard" spec model - reclaimed (and very old) Redwood top, mahogany body, Grez tailpiece, and a 25" scale. What makes this one unique are the pickups - Jason Lollar's Charlie Christian model.

These pickups work beautifully with this guitar, taking full advantage of the semi-hollow body (it's 13 1/4" wide, btw). If you fancy a very travel-worthy archtop alternative, you'd absolutely love what the neck pickup brings to the table (which is to say, a fantastic archtop-like midrange/tone).

That said, jazz isn't the only world this guitar inhabits. The bridge pickup delivers really clear, powerful tones with a very strong fundamental (classic stuff for a CC style pickup). The middle position's tones might've made Steve Cropper blush - just gorgeous, spanky rhythm tones that can cover a huge range of genres.

The neck profile is classic Mendocino - medium chunky, so to speak, that will appeal to any type of guitarist we can think of. Not too fat, not too skinny...it's literally the perfect middle ground. Factor in excellent playability and fretwork and you've got one hell of a cool guitar. Easy to see why so many have fallen under its spell.
