Product information

A revolutionary instrument from its first year of production, this 1954 Fender Stratocaster is a remarkable instrument that represents a major turning point in cultural and musical history.

It's interesting to think that after almost 60 years in business, our shop is still experiencing "firsts" with vintage inventory. Moments like this continue to have significant impact on us as musicians and guitar fanatics, and it's what truly excites us to come into work every day and do what we do.

This 1954 Fender Stratocaster is the first first-year example of the legendary solidbody electric we've welcomed into our space...ever! It's a special piece of Fender history, and it's just cool to hold something that, even in its infancy, shows just how progressive and also well-designed an instrument it was. Although the Stratocaster continued to evolve through the 50s and into the 60s with tremendous impact, we can't help but look back to this guitar and its origin story.

This is a late Spring / early Summer build judging by some of the rarer transitional features, such as the short skirt polystyrene knobs, 100k potentiometers, and lack of worm route in the bridge pickup cavity. The original Ash body features a beautiful Sunburst finish along with clear nail holes under the pickguard, as well as a pencil date in the tremolo cavity of '5/54' and a masking tape date in the control cavity of '6/11/54', signed by Mary. The neck was completed by Tadeo Gomez and initialed on the heel along with a date of '6-54', which is concurrent with the body date.

The original single coil pickups are connected to an almost entirely original wiring harness. When we first acquired the guitar, the volume pot had been replaced by an old Centralab potentiometer that dated from early 1959. It was a 500k audio taper pot as well. Not a great fit for this Strat! However, the two tone pots showed original Stackpole 100k linear potentiometers dated from the 41st week of 1953.

We were fortunate to source a proper 100k pot to restore the harness to its original spec. The original tone cap had also been replaced many years ago with a ceramic disk cap, which we elected to leave in place. The pickups were also wax potted at some point, though the timeline is unknown. The previous owner had purchased the guitar in the early 1980s and made no changes in the 40+ years he'd owned.

The neck has the prototypical Soft V profile that is super comfortable and nicely broken in. The original frets remain, and although they're low, they still offer a wonderful vintage feel and playing experience. It's rare to run into such an early Strat with original fretwire, and for that reason we decided to leave it to its next owner to decide whether or not that fretwire gets changed. The original Kluson tuners are in nice shape as well, both cosmetically and functionally.

The bridge, saddles, tremolo block, and arm are original to the guitar, with the latter having lost part of its tip to breakage. The pickguard is a bit of mystery. While it meets the criteria of an earlier single-ply 8-hole pickguard and has the flat/matte backside, there's an additional screw hole added to it. No additional screw hole exists in the body itself, so it's plausible that this pickguard came from another early Stratocaster following some sort of modification. It's possible the pickguard could be a modified original, but that doesn't really explain the extra hole.

With the unfortunate exception of a longitudinal finish gouge on the back of the body, it's actually a fairly clean guitar for its age. Still, there's nothing quite like an original two-tone Sunburst finish on an early Strat. The 3-piece Ash body has some lovely grain/figure as well.

While not the lightest Strat you're apt to encounter (which is often the case with early Strats and Teles), this guitar has an impressive amount of resonance and sustain. There's something about having added mass in a Strat that gives it a bit more heft and definition in its tone.

The guitar is accompanied by its original Bulwin "Poodle" hardshell case, often found with the earliest Stratocasters before the introduction of the first generation rectangle tweed "center pocket" case that followed. The case itself is in excellent condition.
