Product information

From an acknowledged master of mandolin-family instruments, Smart's short-scale octave mandolin combines sublime tone with effortless playability.

Lawrence Smart's instruments just seem to have music in them. They feel lived in and time worn, right from the get go—open, responsive, and player friendly. There is an earthiness in character, sound, feel, and aesthetic that are all bound up in a singular experience. That intimate comfort they impart part of why they have appealed to so many top-tier professional musicians.

An enticing, short-scale archtop octave, the Smart excels across a range of acoustic styles, from Celtic to contemporary American roots, indie folk rock and beyond. Slow, airy chords sound massive, while single-note melody passages come across with a warm vitality and lively personality seldom heard in an archtop octave mandolin.

Currently set up in the standard octave tuning (GDAE with unison G and D strings), Lawrence kindly provided a second, precut saddle to accommodate the octave-strung G and D course tuning popularized by Sarah Jarosz. While this setup won't turn you into a modern acoustic troubadour trailblazer like Sarah, the tuning is a blast to explore!

Priced with a custom Hoffee fiberglass case.
