This extremely fine-sounding D-42 from luthier J.C. Baxendale is one of the most pleasant surprises we've encountered in years. We have heard the builder's praises sung by our friends at Mass Street Music, but this is the first Baxendale guitar we've hosted at TME. Its workmanship is ultra-clean (think Collings-esque, seriously). And its sound more than justifies the hype. Essentially built on a 30's Martin platform, with slightly modified bracing aimed at a delicate player in search of big responsiveness, this guitar has thunder and bloom aplenty. The low end is full, powerful, and focused, and the mids and trebles exhibit enviable roundness and sparkle. If you're searching for a Brazilian Rosewood guitar that'll flip a light switch for you, this one gets our highest marks.

We rate this guitar in very good overall condition: while it's pre-owned, it shows only faint signs of playwear. The finish retains its original luster, and the frets show no significant wear. Our shop has inspected it, given it a clean bill of health, and freshened the setup. Priced with its original Harptone hard case.
