Ergonomic design, master-level fretwork, custom pickups, and innovative bridges - Ron Thorn's SoCal C/S delivers tone, comfort, and precision in one.
Ron Thorn’s career has been extraordinary: Fender’s exclusive inlay artist since 1995, launched Thorn Guitars in 2000 to critical acclaim, and more recently served as Principal Master Builder and Director of Master Build Operations at the Fender Custom Shop. For nearly three decades, Ron has quietly defined what it means to build guitars that are both technically masterful and deeply personal instruments.
We don’t toss around words like “special” lightly. But these SoCal C/S guitars? They’re something else. The level of detail, resonance, and playability Ron delivers is exactly why we’re so thrilled he’s chosen to call TME home.
At first glance, the Thorn C/S might catch your eye with its atypical silhouette. But don’t mistake form for flair - every line serves a purpose.
That subtle offset body? It’s pure ergonomic genius. When seated, the shape naturally balances against your leg and gently angles the neck into the perfect playing position. It’s the kind of design choice you don’t think about - because you don’t have to. It simply works.
Then there’s the neck. A comfortable medium-C carve, precision fretwork with Ron’s signature hidden fret ends, a 10" radius, and no string tree (thanks to a finely calculated neck angle). It’s all anchored by a rock-solid dovetail neck joint. The result? A neck that disappears under your fingers. No resistance. No distractions. Just pure connection between player and instrument.
Electronics-wise, the C/S is full of surprises. Ron’s in-house wound VC-50 pickups deliver expanded Strat-style tones with more girth and clarity, especially in the bridge position. From bell-like cleans to edge-of-breakup bite, and even into high-gain territory, the C/S inspires across the tonal spectrum.
And finally, Ron’s bridge designs are in a class of their own. The 1-piece tremolo glides with precision and expressive nuance - stable, smooth, and completely solid tuning-wise.
In every respect, the C/S reflects the mind of a master builder who never stops refining. It's a guitar that feels custom-made for players who demand both performance and artistry in equal measure.
