As John Cleese once famously quipped, "And now for something completely different!"
DEVO fans, collectors, and guitar nerds, this one’s for you. The J2V2 is the brainchild of Ron Thorn (former Fender Masterbuilder and founder of Thorn Custom Guitars) and Josh Hager, who’s been manning guitar and synth duties for DEVO since 2014.
It’s almost comical to call this a “rare opportunity to purchase a cool guitar." Outside of the guitars Josh owns and tours with, these two J2V2s we’re offering (see our other listing) are the only ones in existence, and they’re everything you’d hope a DEVO-approved, Thorn-built guitar would be: offbeat, high-performance, and completely dialed-in.
The design started with a few rough influences - a flipped Jazzmaster silhouette, a nod to the Hamer Phantom A5 GT (one of Josh's faves), and some key aesthetic and functional details. Add to that Thorn’s brilliant Brass Knuckle bridge and trem, Sperzel locking tuners, block inlays that glow in the dark (yes, really - yellow, because of course!), and a Strat-style output jack. The result? A rock-ready instrument that looks like it time-traveled from another dimension and landed squarely on stage with DEVO.
Specs include a Swamp Ash body, quartersawn maple neck, East Indian rosewood fretboard, a Round C profile (.85–.98"), 10" radius, 6150 frets, and Duncan Saturday Night Special humbuckers with push-pull coil splits for added versatility. Tonally, it’s bold, punchy, and ready to rip - but has enough dynamic nuance to clean up beautifully. And yes, it’s a joy to play. The fretwork, balance, and feel are everything you’d expect from a Thorn build.
And no, it’s not designed for shredding at the 22nd fret, and that’s the point. As the old joke goes, “there’s no money past the 5th fret.” This guitar is about attitude, feel, and unapologetic originality. You can sense the fun and energy Josh and Ron poured into it the moment you plug in and start playing. It’s a one-of-a-kind guitar, made to be played loud - and with a grin.
