Product information

The fabled sound. Collectibility. Expertly maintained. This 1935 000-28 is a presentation-grade example of what a pre-war Martin can be.

This Martin 000-28, serial number 60917, was stamped on September 11, 1935, and cleared final inspection on April 28, 1936.

It's an absolutely wonderful instrument by the standards of anyone interested in vintage-Martin lore. And it's a first-year guitar for a couple historically significant features related to Martin's "Golden-Era" production development.

1935 was the first full year Martin's "000" model transitioned to a short scale. Many (though not all) 1934 000 models actually carry the standard 25.4" scale of an OM; and those guitars usually featured a somewhat thinner neck profile held over from the OM era. Martin's now-classic Sunburst finish was also unveiled in 1935. The shaded-top guitars seen during the OM era (roughly 1930 to 1934) looked like what we'd consider an "Ambertone" finish today -- more monochromatic, and more reddish-mahogany in color. The Sunburst on this guitar is beautifully weathered, but largely unfaded. And while the finish doesn't affect the guitar's sound, Sunburst Martins are infinitely rare compared to their natural-top counterparts.

This guitar has seen very little work over its lifetime: it's exactly the kind of pre-war Martin we hope to find. Almost all-original, and only maintained by expert hands. The original bridge was replaced by TJ Thompson, who also reset the neck, refretted the fingerboard, repaired one hairline top crack near the treble side of the fingerboard extension, and touched up two areas of playwear adjacent to the extension. He also installed Waverly tuners, though the original tuners are included with the guitar. Our shop has freshened the setup, but this guitar needs nothing and plays beautifully. All other structural components, including the bridge plate, are original and intact.

The sound of this guitar is sublime and encyclopedic when it comes to pre-war Martins. It's gorgeously dry, with warmth, power, and responsiveness that rank at the top of what one can expect from a 1930's 000-28. Priced with tweed Cedar Creek case.
