Product information

Masterbuilt vs. Team Built? If your budget allows, this one makes the answer easy.

The first thing you notice when you pop the case on this David Brown '63 Masterbuilt is the Candy Apple Red finish. Candy Apple is such a cool color, especially on a Tele with its mix of parchment pickguard, maple board, and nickel hardware. It's flashy in a way, kind of like a vintage muscle car is flashy.

We've had quite a few David Brown builds in our hands this year and we continued to be impressed with his work. The level of quality is a given being a Masterbuilt, but like any single-luthier made instrument, there's a vibe with his work that's really musical and inspiring.

If you like your Tele with the playability of a Strat, the '60 style oval C neck profile will be right up you alley (it's .82-.89", btw). Combined with a 9 1/2" radius, 45085 frets, and low action, we were trying out a chickin' pickin' licks from the second we picked up it - when in Rome, right?

This one is far from just a shredder though. Like every great Tele, its versatility is really the thing. Loaded with '63 hand-wound pickups and threaded steel saddles, you can veer into anything from indie rock, Frisell-isms, country licks, and punk without breaking a sweat. Just gorgeous stuff here!

The million dollar question is: Masterbuilt or Team Built? Are Masterbuilts really worth it? If your budget allows and you're looking for boutique quality with the benefit of Fender's brand equity? It's a no brainer. Yes, Masterbuilts are absolutely worth it. This is a phenomenal guitar that'd we proudly own ourselves.
