The Mockingbird model has become a bit of a modern classic, thanks to praise from players like Josh Smith, Ariel Posen, Joey Landreth, and Drew Shirley. Spend just a few minutes with one and you’ll understand why.

Inspired by the golden-era Gibson semi-hollow formula, the Mockingbird borrows familiar materials and construction - in this case, curly maple laminate body, mahogany neck, dual humbuckers- but what sets it apart is the feel. There’s a precision to the build and a responsiveness that’s hard to ignore. It’s not trying to be a vintage clone; it’s doing its own thing with a voice and playing experience that stands confidently in its own lane.

This build features Lollar Imperial humbuckers (regular wind), which are a perfect match for the Mockingbird’s vibe. The bridge pickup delivers clear, harmonically rich drive tones with just the right amount of grit and punch, while the neck pickup brings warmth and bloom without ever sounding muddy. Whether clean or pushed, there's an immediacy to the response that makes the guitar incredibly fun to play.

The neck profile is another highlight: measuring .89” at the first fret, it leans into that slightly chunky ES-335 territory - substantial without being bulky, and incredibly natural in the hand. It’s the kind of neck that makes you forget about specs and just play.

For players who love the idea of a semi-hollow but haven’t found the right connection with a Gibson, or for those who are looking for something with a more dialed-in, modern sensibility, the Mockingbird hits the sweet spot. Josh has built something that feels familiar, but far from ordinary.
